Waterproofing in Auckland — Done Before the Tiles

The invisible step that protects everything above it — sealed to code, cured properly, done right.

If the waterproofing fails, the tiles come off. That’s why Tarara Tiling treats waterproofing as the foundation of every wet area, not a box to tick. Led by Marko, an approved PS3 Producer Statement author, we waterproof bathrooms, showers, laundries and wet rooms across Auckland to the New Zealand Building Code — before a single tile is laid.

Where Waterproofing Matters

Showers & wet rooms

the highest-risk zone in the house; sealed floors, walls and junctions with proper falls.

Bathrooms & laundries

full wet-area protection wherever water meets tile.

Balconies & decks

exposed surfaces that need the right membrane for Auckland’s weather.

Compliant With the New Zealand Building Code

Waterproofing wet areas isn’t optional — it’s a Building Code requirement, and getting it wrong is one of the most expensive mistakes in a renovation. Every system we install is chosen and applied to meet the NZ Building Code and the manufacturer’s specifications, cured properly before tiling begins. For projects that need it, our PS3 Producer Statement gives your council and your builder documented assurance the job was done correctly.

The Real Cost of Poor Waterproofing

A leak rarely announces itself. By the time you see a stain, smell mustiness or spot lifting tiles, water has often been getting into the substrate for months — rotting framing, growing mould and damaging the rooms below. Redoing a failed bathroom means ripping out the tiles you just paid for. Waterproofing done properly the first time is the cheapest insurance in the whole build.

What Auckland Homeowners Say

“Everything was fully waterproofed before tiling and the grout and epoxy colour matched up exactly to the perfectly cut tiles. Their technique is second to none.” — Kirsty V.

Waterproofing FAQs

How long does waterproofing take to dry?

It depends on the system and conditions, but most wet-area membranes need to cure fully before tiling — typically a day or two. We never rush this step, because curing time is what makes the seal reliable.

Is waterproofing required by law in New Zealand?

Yes — waterproofing of wet areas is a New Zealand Building Code requirement. For eligible projects we can provide a PS3 Producer Statement documenting that it was installed correctly.

Do I need a Producer Statement (PS3)?

If your project has a building consent, your council or builder may require a PS3 for the waterproofing. As an approved author, Marko can provide one for eligible projects — ask us at the quote stage.

Can you waterproof without doing the tiling?

Yes. We’re happy to provide waterproofing as a standalone service for builders and other trades, as well as part of our own tiling projects.

What are the signs my waterproofing has failed?

Musty smells, discoloured or lifting tiles, spongy floors, or water marks on ceilings below a bathroom. If you notice any of these, get it looked at early — the sooner it’s caught, the smaller the repair.
